Louvered Closet Doors Come in Different Styles

Some closets simply need air circulation due to their contents. A shoe closet must have air circulation in order to keep down odors. Pantries need air circulation due to fresh vegetables that are kept in them. Louvered closet doors make this possible because of their design. They are designed to allow air to flow through the louvers. These are slats of wood or metal that is inserted into a frame.

There are different styles of louvered closet doors including cafe, saloon and plantation. The cafe types are great for a laundry room or between a dining room and a kitchen because they are usually only about twenty-four inches long. Saloon style doors are also short with a western style to them. Plantation doors are perfect for almost any closet in your home because they extend from the top of the doorway to the floor.

The most common type of louvered doors is wood. Pine is the most common type of wood used for them because it is a hardwood and is resistant to bug infestation. Pine doors can be purchased unfinished so you can stain or paint them to match your other decor. Although they do use other types of wood such as oak, cherry and mahogany, if you purchase unfinished ones you can stain them with an oak, cherry or mahogany stain and they will look just like that wood.

Prices vary depending on the size of the doors, the materials used and whether they are finished or unfinished. Of course prices of unfinished doors are cheaper than those of finished ones. You should check with local retailers to compare prices and what is readily available.

Some closets require sliding doors. Louvered closet doors can be found in the sliding variety but only one side will slide. These are called bifold doors. One side remains stationary while hinged to another panel which slides to open and close the door. This does not always require two tracks for the doors to ride in. This type of closet door is called a hanging sliding door or top hung door. These are great for a bedroom closet where a bottom track could be tripped on or in a utility room.

Although a utility room or linen closet is the most common place for louvered closet doors, they can also be used in a bedroom. They are sleek enough to be used on a narrow door jamb while they still provide the privacy you want your closet door to give you. A wardrobe is another good place to use these doors. While many wardrobe doors are solid, you can use the louvered variety as a replacement. A double set would fit a wide opening like a wardrobe.

Even though louvered closet doors are available at most home and building supply stores, you should check with your local retailers to see what is most common in your area and what is most commonly stocked. Some areas may not carry all styles and designs.
