Before You Buy the Best Replacement Closet Doors Out There, Give These Three Fixes a Try

So the bifold doors on your closet are sticking, and you are tired of it. So tired of it in fact, that each time you open your closet, you seriously contemplate ripping them out with your bare hands. Then, depending on the day, you imagine either replacing them with the best replacement closet doors you can find, or replacing them with a sheet stapled to the wall. And least a sheet wouldn't get stuck in the door tracks!

But before you start ripping your closet doors out of their tracks, why not give these fixes a try. They might work, and they might not, but if they do, they will save you the hassle of replacing your closet doors.

Fix #1: Try Some Wax or Silicone Spray

Sometimes, even the best replacement closet doors get sticky. So before buying a new set of bifold doors, go to your local hardware store and buy some wax or silicone spray. Apply a light coating of either one to the top and bottom tracks, and you'll likely find that this takes care of the problem. If not, then the top or bottom pivot and brackets might be loose.

Fix #2: Check the Top and Bottom Pivots and Brackets

To do this, close the door, and look at the top edge of the door. It should be perfectly lined up with the frame. If it's off, chances are the top pivot and bracket have become loose, allowing the door to slip out of the tracks. Open the door, and using a screwdriver, loosen the screw for the top bracket.

Close the door, and then push or pull it until it is perfectly in alignment with the door frame. Close and open the door a few times to make sure it opens smoothly, and then carefully open the door, making sure that the bracket doesn't move. Screw it back into place, and any binding occurring at the top of the door should be taken care of. Do the same with the bottom bracket.

Fix #3: Call in the Handyman

If neither of these fixes work, give a handyman a call. These "Jacks of all Trades" usually charge around an hour, and can easily help you figure out what the problem is with your doors. He (or she) can either fix the problem, or install the best replacement closet doors possible - thus saving you from ruining your good sheets!
