Leading Benefits of Installing Sliding Closet Doors

The popular term "sliding doors" is almost a misnomer since most such as openings are single- rather than double-door. That is, one door panel is fixed while another moves sideways. Common examples are sliding closet doors, screen doors and shower doors. In a typical sliding doorway, the panels travel through steel rollers running along a track hidden from view. This track and roller system is held in place by a door frame that is often made from steel, the strongest variety, but may be PVC, aluminum or wood.

When deciding how to install sliding closet doors, there are two general types to choose from - top hung or bottom rolling. The panels are built to hang from an overhead trolley in a top hung system, and since the trolley hangers bear the entire weight, it is easier to move the door. However, there is a maximum weight that a top track can carry. Panels are made to rest on roller wheels running on a foot track in a bottom rolling system. It is not as easy to glide over the door but this type can accommodate weightier panels.

A popular method of installing a sliding wardrobe entry is a pocket door, in which the moving panel is designed to disappear into an extraneous wall compartment. Utility rooms, dens, toilets, bathrooms, study rooms and other rooms with bypass doors often use pocket doors. They provide floor space more than conventional closet entries that open forward. The same space-saving principle applies, in fact, to Japanese shoji screen doors wherein a latticed screen frame holds one sliding panel, usually made with a white paper.

Not only sliding closet doors have efficient use of space but also their wider counterpart, double sliding doors such as in walk-in closets. These are widely used for openings to outdoor parts of the home like a balcony, patio, lanai and swimming pool deck, even the backyard and garden. Another use is for interior sanctuaries like office rooms and sitting rooms, especially those fashioned after old Victorian houses. It is not so many space economies that are the real motivation for the wider versions but architectural styling.

Installing Bedroom Sliding Doors - Some DIY Tips

If you want to install a bedroom sliding door, then you should realize that it is not impossible for the average person. Making the installation a do-it-yourself project is quite a good idea. However, you also should know that if you botch the job, you will be paying for it. A poorly installed sliding door can cause a variety of problems.

If you do not think that you are up to the challenge, then you might want to get some expert help. Did you know that the dealer you buy the sliding doors from can actually help you with the installation? Actually, when you go with this option, you can get the installation done in a matter of minutes.

Why is getting expert help necessary? Well, installing sliding doors can be complicated in the measuring part. You need to make sure that your door frame is perfectly square and level. This goes the same for the door. Otherwise, you are going to have some problems in the installation process.

With a sliding door, you want to make sure that the structure that will bear the weight of the door, the top frame, will be able to bear the load properly. If the frame is made out of wood, you need to make sure that the wood is properly weatherproofed and will not rot or weaken over time. This is a very important factor to consider because a weak door frame could lead to more serious damage when the sliding door can no longer be supported by the frame.

The actual process of hanging the door also requires perfection. You need the door to be 100 percent square. This allows for the smooth and flawless operation of the sliding door. If you don't think you are up to the challenge, better get a professional.

Measuring is crucial. You need to make sure that the door you are getting is the same size as the frame. You also need to make sure that the door is perfectly square. How do you accomplish this? An easy way for you to do this would be to take the diagonal measurement of the door. If the measurements are equal, the door is squared.

If you do not intend to install the door immediately after you purchase it, you need to make sure that it is protected. You should store it in a dry, well ventilated area. Store it flat, not standing. You need to protect it from moisture, especially if it is a wood door. Why? Because certain types of wood can swell when exposed to moisture and that could mean problems during installation.

When installing the sliding door, you need to make sure that the bottom railing is exactly underneath the door. This can be a hard task to accomplish. Don't rely on your eyesight. What looks exact to you might not look exact to a measuring tape. You need to take precise measurements in order to make sure that the door fits perfectly onto the bottom railing and thus, works perfectly. Installing a sliding door is no joke.

If you truly want to DIY, then the installation of a bedroom sliding door should be done as carefully as possible. It requires that you put in some hard work. If, however, you want convenience at the cost of a few extra dollars, then you should just get expert and professional help.

Eight Steps to Installing Sliding Closet Doors

Installing sliding closet doors not only makes access to your clothes much more convenient, it gives your bedroom an instant face lift. Eight Steps

1. Take Measurements - You will need to measure the opening where the door will go. It is a good idea to measure the top and the bottom of the space just to be safe. Record these measurements and take them with you to the hardware store.

2. Choose Your Material - There are different types of wood to choose from or you may want to install mirrors. Make sure that you pick up wood stain and related materials if your timber is unfurnished.

3. Prep Your Doors - If you are working with raw materials, you may need to sand, stain and let them dry however, many doors come ready to install when you buy them so this step won't be necessary.

4. Remove Old Door(s) - Whether you have a standard door or old wardrobe sliding doors currently leading into your closet, they will need to be removed. The old track will also need to be removed using a screwdriver as well because chances are, you won't need any of the old hardware other than the door guides.

5. Track Install - Using your drill, you will install the upper and lower track, make sure that it fits right against the door opening. You may want to use a shim to level the track if necessary.

6. Mounting - If you had sliding doors before, you can use the previous location as a guide to mount the brackets. Make sure that the screws are tightly seated so that the tops of them won't interfere with the movement of the rollers. However, take caution not to over tighten them or they can warp which will inhibit smooth door movement.

7. Rollers - The rollers will need to be mounted on the doors following the manufacturer's instructions. Some kits will already have these mounted for you.

8. Hang your new doors on their tracks.

Helpful Tips

• The most popular door height is 80 inches however, this can vary depending on the age, location and overall structural design of your home. Doors can easily be custom built to individual specifications if necessary.

• When working with large pieces, always have someone help you to avoid damage to the door or injury to your self.

• Always wear proper safety gear when installing sliding closet doors such as goggles, gloves, ear plugs and work boots or shoes.
